Marketing of unique Rooftop Solar panels across the Middle East and Africa region.

Masdar City in Abu Dhabi had invested in the cutting-edge technology of unique solar panels that were designed for white reflective rooftops. The panels were laid on flat roofs – a massive unutilized real estate across the world that can help generate gigawatts of energy. Being a new entrant, the panels had been introduced across the MEA region as well as having an installation placed on the grounds of Masdar City in Abu Dhabi as a test case. The panels were manufactured in the Bay Area in California and have 100% US manufacturing materials, a plus in a market dominated by the Chinese.

Engagement: The assignment came at a time of a key solar exhibition in Abu Dhabi where we were able to showcase the innovative design and solution of these products garnering interest from both private and government bodies. Installing the panels in 48C temperatures in Abu Dhabi had been a challenge that had to be addressed as we had to observe the performance in extreme temperatures and dusty conditions as well. Experts from the factory were invited for this task and a specialised paint manufacturer for reflective white coatings was engaged as well. The successful installation became a showcase for all future customers in the region. The next step had been the establishment of the sales office in Abu Dhabi appointing a regional manager. Teams from Morocco and Egypt were taken for a factory visit in California with an introductory session and presentation held in New York for these delegates as well, the participants had been decision makers in their respective markets. The first major installation was made at the national headquarters of Vodacom in Johannesburg, South Africa. The newly built futuristic headquarters were to run on renewable energy and the rooftop panels were used to reduce the carbon footprint. The designs of the panels were incorporated with the roof layout by the architects and the eventual finished work came as a piece of art.

Impact: The UAE and the regional markets appreciated the utilization of flat rooftops as an asset that must be utilised. The standard flat plate panels that dominate the market were replaced by the newer designs for rooftops and engineers and building designers started incorporating new techniques in construction.
