‘Your potential is limitless, and the world is your classroom’

My career journey has been an exhilarating adventure, marked by unwavering dedication, adaptability and an unquenchable thirst for growth. What sets my story apart is the diverse array of industries I’ve had the privilege of working in, each contributing invaluable lessons to my professional repertoire.

I embarked on this journey with a determination to excel in sales and customer service. My initial milestone was Qatar Airways, where I honed my skills as a Sales Assistant & Brand Ambassador. Here, I discovered the art of surpassing targets and even revitalizing the sales of seemingly stagnant products. The aviation industry taught me the importance of meticulous attention to detail and the significance of building strong customer relationships.

The next chapter led me to Encalm Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., where I embraced the role of Assistant Manager in Airport Hospitality and Premium Service. My primary focus was to deliver impeccable customer service, addressing every customer’s unique needs swiftly. This experience taught me the art of managing not just customer expectations but also a team, ensuring that everyone performed at their best.

My journey then took an exciting turn as I ventured into the automotive industry with AMP Motors Pvt Ltd. As a Sales Manager, I refined my sales and negotiation skills, reaching out to clients through various channels. I realised that building long-lasting client relationships was more than just good business; it was the key to future opportunities. Overseeing various aspects of auto sales, I learned that every detail mattered in creating a seamless customer experience. Throughout these transitions, I discovered the power of adaptability and the importance of continuous learning. My journey has been a testament to the idea that success transcends industry boundaries. The ability to adapt, learn, and thrive in different environments is the true mark of an achiever.

Beyond my career, I am a well-rounded individual with a deep passion for diverse interests, including horse riding, reading books, trekking, and embarking on adventurous journeys. These pursuits have taught me the value of balance and the importance of nurturing one’s personal passions alongside professional endeavours. My story isn’t just about my achievements; it’s about the lessons I’ve gathered from each unique experience. It’s about the adaptability and resilience I’ve cultivated along the way. It’s about the unwavering belief that success knows no bounds, and with the right mindset and determination, one can thrive in any industry. As you embark on your own journey, remember that the most valuable lessons often come from unexpected places.

Embrace change, relish challenges, and never stop learning. Your career is not a linear path; it’s an incredible expedition of self-discovery and fulfilment. Your potential is limitless, and the world is your classroom. Let your journey inspire not only your own growth but also the growth of those fortunate enough to learn from your experiences.

Evolving Perspectives: A Journey from FMCG to Telecom Industry with CBD thinking

As a native of the UAE, my journey into the professional world began immediately after completing my college exams. Armed with cultural insight and local know-how, I secured a position in FMCG within a week. Little did I know that this initial step would not only define my career trajectory, but also shape my work ethic and approach to business for years to come.

They say that the habits and work ethic formed early in one’s career become ingrained, setting the tone for how tasks, deadlines and responsibilities are approached throughout one’s professional life. This certainly held true in my case as I found myself immersed in the world of P&G for first 4 years, where the language spoken was a unique one – that of the Customer Business Development (CBD) Manager as a role.

The term might not be widely used, but at P&G, it represented a crucial role: developing the business of the customer, often a retailer. As a supplier, my initial confusion was understandable – why focus on the retailer’s business development when the primary goal is to sell our company’s products and foster our business? However, it was during these formative years that I learned the paradigm of thinking ‘customer-first’. This approach involved offering products in a way that enhanced the customer’s sales, creating marketing collateral and integrating ‘our products’ into advertising efforts to boost the customer’s business, ultimately benefiting both parties.

After five years of adopting this mindset, I found myself transitioning to the telecom industry in 2005 as Sales Manager, just as mobile phones were becoming a ubiquitous commodity. The shift was drastic. The industry mantra was to “move the box as if there is no tomorrow,” emphasizing relentless selling. This clashed with my ingrained customer-centric philosophy, leading to a period of adaptation and finding a balance. Fortunately, having bosses from major FMCG companies helped bridge the gap, allowing us to challenge the status quo and pioneer a customer business development approach within the telecom sector. The result was a revolutionary channel that annually sold billions AED worth of mobile phones, defying conventional industry practices.

Fast forward a decade with Virgin Mobile, Redington and in my current role with TCL as Regional Manager, managing operations & Distributors across GCC and Pakistan, the principle of an end-to-end business development has remained my guiding philosophy. Whether working with distributors or operators, I firmly believe that the movement of our products at customer premises determines our market share and the future of our company. Thinking ‘business development’ rather than merely selling products has become the cornerstone of my approach – a simple concept that, when executed effectively, works like magic. Yes, it is important that companies develop marketing strategies and products/services to standout, but ‘partner focus’ is parallelly important part when it comes to long term distribution strategy and ultimately ensuring availability on a global scale.

In conclusion, my journey from FMCG to the telecoms industry has been an adventure of adaptation, innovation and a steadfast commitment to customer business development. It reaffirms the belief that a customer-centric mindset, coupled with strategic thinking and a commitment to partnership, can lead to unprecedented success in any industry.

From Delhi to the world: A Journey of Empowerment

Preeti is a marketing and E-commerce specialist – but her journey revolves around people and making a difference. Here is Preeti.

Growing up in a modest setting, I encountered challenges that ignited my determination to create a better future. Born into a family that emphasized hard work and education, I recognised the importance of both from an early age. I took on odd jobs and taught kids in my community. As a young adult, the world outside Delhi seemed like an unattainable dream. Fate, however, had a different plan. An incredible opportunity led me to Qatar, a place filled with boundless possibilities.

In Qatar, I discovered a world of opportunities. I had the privilege to work in advertising and marketing with prestigious organisations like Qatar Airways and on projects like the FIFA World Cup Qatar, contributing to endeavours that celebrated global moments.

This experience expanded my horizons, exposed me to diverse cultures, and humbled me in countless ways. It served as a reminder that determination and seizing opportunities could lead to extraordinary adventures.

But my journey is not just about personal success; it’s about extending a helping hand to those facing similar challenges. I was able to help students in Delhi from underprivileged backgrounds – their parents were typically working as cleaners, drivers etc. Most had reached out to my parents and I was keen to support. One such student was a recent graduate who I am helping with experience locally before applying for roles in UAE. I’ve embraced the role of a coach and mentor for people from these humble backgrounds, by trying to guide them towards brighter educational and career prospects with utmost humility and kindness. I simply want to help people to help their kids so their kids feel a better like and better prospects are achievable.

My story is a testament that no dream is too ambitious, and no background can restrict ones potential. It’s a tale of resilience, empowerment, and the joy of assisting others. The challenges I faced in my youth became stepping stones to uplift others, creating a ripple effect of positive transformation, all while I remained grounded and compassionate.

I live my life with the belief that everyone deserves a chance to shine, irrespective of their background. By empowering others, I remain a part of their journeys, just as others played a vital role in mine. It’s a circle of support and inspiration that transcends boundaries, embodying the spirit of the Connection Revolution.

As I share this story, my hope is that it inspires others to believe in their capabilities and encourages them to lend a helping hand to those in need, fostering a world where opportunities are accessible to all, and dreams are realised with humility and kindness.

From burnout to strengthening leadership

Here is a great lesson in leadership thought from Mohammed ElHefnawy.

Living in Dubai, I found it difficult to balance my busy schedule, work and personal life. When I entered the retail industry as a Junior Manager in 2017, I was driven by a single-minded vision of business improvement and personal success.

In 2019, I was promoted to a management position but was on the verge of burnout. My constant pursuit of perfection left me exhausted and neglecting my well-being.
Then came 2020, marked by the pandemic but also by a life-changing meeting with a life coach. The crucial moment came when she asked, “What are your top five priorities?” » I mentioned my relationship with Allah, my job, my son, my family and my friends – the list seemed long.

But then she asked me a question that shocked me: “And you, are in included in such list?”

This was a shocking discovery; I forgot to put myself as a priority.

That was an ‘A-ha moment’ to me and then an immediate change was needed.

I took very committed steps towards my new list and the results were surprising. Despite the pandemic, my work efficiency increased by 23% year on year. In nine months, I lost 115kg to reach 70kg.

On a personal level, I pursued certifications like Project Management Professional (PMP) and embarked on an MBA. My personal and professional relationships dramatically improved.

The message is clear :

Self-prioritization is not selfish; it is crucial to success. Personal and professional development consultants play a key role in this journey.

As Joyce Meyer says, “If we live a self-centered, self-motivated, self-centered life, always wanting to go our own way, we will be unhappy.” » My journey has made the truth clear: By appreciating ourselves, we enrich our lives, increase our successes and deepen our relationships.

As I continue this journey, my leadership style has evolved. I extended the principles of self-care to my team and moved from working for me success to working for their success journey.

The most important thing was to promote a culture of collaboration and support. I showed genuine interest in each team member, understanding their needs and encouraging open communication. Regular meetings gave them strength and allowed innovative ideas to emerge.

Investments in their development were of paramount importance. I encouraged them to learn and improve in their career. Mentoring and Coaching have become the norm and promote personal and professional development.
I empowered my team by giving them autonomy and responsibility in their work. The results were surprising. Commitment, motivation and teamwork have increased. We went from working for me to achieving common goals together.

My Journey from Burnout to Confident Leadership is a testament to the power of prioritising, taking care of yourself and working for your team. It is a path to excellence, both personally and professionally, and reminds us that when you invest in your team, you enable them to achieve great things.

In conclusion, my journey is a testament to the power of prioritisation, self-care, and servant leadership. It encapsulates the transformation from burnout to empowering leadership, underlining the significance of valuing oneself and working for the success of the team.

Sharing – Self-Awareness & Self-Reflection

As we say at InspireMe, everyone has a story to share and inspirational moments every day that help shape and define a person. But our quest for getting content is not always an easy one. Despite living in GCC for close to decade, perhaps I’ve been naive. People for some reason, do not always like to share – and I am talking about people through my network.
The most amusing response I get from some people is “I have done nothing inspirational – I am not inspired by anything I have done. There is really nothing to share”. I suggest individuals need to spend time self-reflecting – life is about a string of potentially ‘inspirational moments’. I could literally reel off 20 moments through my 3 decades in business that have helped define me. This is about self-awareness and realisation.
Now I’ve even made it easy for them. My 38 years in UK and my proud ‘B Grade’ in English GCSE has helped make me a dab hand at write ups. “Just send me a voice note..” I tell potential contributors. I will do the hard graft for you. Sure, no problem. Then you wait. And wait. Yes, life is busy and everyone has priorities. But deep down I sense some mental resistance from people. “I do not want any sensitive company data – in fact, you can avoid your current place of work as an example if that is a concern”. I often guide people on what we are looking for and make it easy for them to contribute.
Then again… tumble weed.
I had a great call a few weeks ago with a gentleman we hope to collaborate with and we discussed this exact point – people’s ‘resistance to share’. There were some fascinating insights that we discussed. People in developing regions are often constrained by this ‘subconscious colonial mindset’. The big issue we see – is people do not feel ‘Empowered’. There is an inherent ‘fear factor’ in the back of their minds. They like to keep things to themselves and do not want to put their head above the parapet.
What if my employers see this? What if they think I am looking for another job? What if they do not approve of what I wrote? This is a matter of individuals taking control and having confidence in their personal achievements and understanding how something they share, could have an impact on others. It isn’t about sharing corporate information. It could even be an every day story not related to work or business.
Overall, this really helped the penny drop for me. As we talk about ‘changing mindsets’ as an ambition. Well, this is what we are trying to do.
Right now, the ‘push’ is on – to get more engaging stories so we can share with each other and keep learning and Inspiring. And I hope in years to come (God willing), when we achieve our 500th or 1000th story, to look back and say, maybe we did help change a mindset or two. And have an influence on some business cultures, where people feel a little more empowered.
As I used to tell my children when they were toddlers – Sharing is Caring. And at InspireMe. That is what we want to do.

Overcoming Adversity – A Cancer Survivor’s story

I’m here as a breast cancer survivor to share my journey – a tale of resilience and hope. It was a milestone that changed my life, a rebirth after enduring 18 sessions of chemo, 12 rounds of radiation and 4 major surgeries. Through the storm of a mastectomy, vision loss, ovary removal, countless tests and scans, that I found strength in the blend of faith and science.
In December 2018, a free screening led me to the hospital, initially just for fun. Little did I know that it would be a turning point. Despite my beliefs, cancer became a reality in my life. Pain in my left breast triggered alarms, even though cancer usually isn’t painful. Ultrasound marked the beginning of my cancer journey. The biopsy results shattered my disbelief.
Support from family and friends was my anchor. My insurance shielded me through surgeries, giving me comfort during a challenging time. Chemo, the battle within, made each day a struggle, but the support of loved ones and meditation fuelled my determination. My appearance changed, but I embraced my new self, finding beauty in resilience.
The road was tough, with radiation, surgeries and treatments affecting my eyesight and ovaries. Yet, I pressed on, meditation keeping me centred and surrounded by positivity. My daily routine continued, my job became a healing force, helping me feel normal during a ‘not-so-normal time’.
On November 28, 2019, I emerged from another operation, stronger than before. Radiation followed, as did vision surgeries and the removal of my ovary. Medications and meditations became my daily companions, weaving a tapestry of healing and perseverance.
I urge each one of you to embrace self-examinations and screenings. Cancer touches many lives – 1/8 women to be precise. Let’s stand together in spreading awareness, making early detection a priority. My journey is a testament that strength, support and determination can triumph over adversity.
Through my journey as a breast cancer survivor, I’ve learned that adversity can reveal our strength. Embrace self-care, lean on your support system and maintain positivity. Embracing change and finding beauty in resilience are powerful tools, as is staying mindful and continuing with your normal routine. Advocate for your needs, cherish the protection of insurance, and spread awareness for early detection. Most importantly, celebrate every day as a precious gift. Let’s stand together, finding strength in unity and hope.
